Sorry for the Overflow: Added 1.2 meters to My Sukkah

I am building the walls to an additional 7 day temporary house this year.  My wife wanted an extra long sukkah.  Yes, G-d willing it will be covered with S'chach, but it has been a real adventure.  We brought our walls from the US on our lift over 10 years ago.  Now I am using all the amazing wood even from a crate that was part of our lift.

This is the overflow for now.  Serious posting will have to wait until Chol HaMo'ed.  I am aware of the "terrorist" attack in the United States at the Wash. D.C. Naval Yard.  12 are dead.  I never mention the perpetrators amongst the dead.  If there is a 2nd gunman still at large, then this was a well-planned coordinated operation which makes it a terror attack.  For what purpose, who knows at this time.

So now they are saying that it was likely the act of a lone gunman. So this may NOT have been a terrorist attack after all.

Someone wanted a quick explanation on how to see comments where there are more than 200 comments. On the main page click on the number of comments for the article desired. On the Article page at the bottom of the page, click on "Post a Comment". That takes you to the Comment Page where one clicks on the "Newer" link to see the comments that exceed the 200th comment.

The keilim made by Betzalel are still where he said they were. But because it is in "Palestine", no one wants to dig them up or even drill a bore hole under the 40 set stones which are there too. I have seen them, and those stones are unnaturally set in place. Those stones were not placed there by a landslide.

Interesting. HaRab Nir ben Artzi writes in this week's parsha sheet (Sukkot):

This period is the period of Geulas Am Yisroel which started in the year Taf Shin Chet (1948) with the establishment of the state.

During this period there were wars in Israel - there will never be anymore ever!

A Third World War will never ever be.

I think that there will be a 3rd World War, but Rav Mordechai Eliyahu zt"l told me years ago that it will be between the West and Persia (along with the Russians). Somehow someway we, here in Eretz Yisrael, will not be involved in it. On a practical plain one has to ask how can that happen, a world war with Persia where we are not involved. It is a secret End of Days phenomenon which will somehow happen because of miracles that we cannot even imagine.

Remember the saying "the punishment fits the crime", well it had me thinking of the beginning. Both punishments involve labor. Not sure why I posted this, maybe someone else was thinking about the same.

16 Unto the woman He said: 'I will greatly multiply thy pain and thy travail; in pain thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.'

17 And unto Adam He said: 'Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying: Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.'

The scriptures indicate that a northern army will invade Israel in the last days.

The details of this invasion from the north are given in Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39. The allies that come with this northern invader are named by nation (tribe). Today most of these nations are Islamic and are enemies of Israel. Ezekiel even lists the countries that will question the reason for this invasion. These nations seem to be nations that come out of the old British Empire and oil rich nations aligned with the West. Ezekiel mentions these nations as Tarshish, all her young lions (English speaking nations), Sheba and Dedan (Saudi Arabia Kuwait). The alignment of nations predicted in Ezekiel is the alignment that we see in that region today. God said He will destroy this northern army that comes against Israel and by doing so He will magnify Himself and become known to many nations.

It says in Ezekiel that at the time of this invasion G'd will send fire on Magog (Russia) and those that dwell securely in the isles (or coast lands), and from that day they shall know that the G'd of Israel exists.

All indications are that the battle against Israel that is described in Ezekiel 38 and 39, and the supernatural defeat of these forces by G'd will take place in this generation.

Obama softens on nuclear Iran: Keep components, just promise not to weaponise them
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis September 18, 2013, 8:55 AM (IDT)

The moderate mien of Iran’s new president Hassan Rouhani has had its intended effect – even before nuclear dialogue began. President Barack Obama had only one demand of Tehran: “Iran would have to demonstrate its own seriousness by agreement not to weaponise nuclear power,” he said Wednesday, Sept. 18. He thus took at his word Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who declared the day before: “We are against nuclear weapons. And when we say no one should have nuclear weapons, we definitely do not pursue it ourselves either.”

The symmetry between the words from Washington and Tehran was perfect in content and timing – and not by chance.

debkafile’s Washington and Iranian sources disclose that it was choreographed in advance.

Obama and Khamenei have been exchanging secret messages through Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, who visited Tehran in the last week of August and conferred with both Khameini and Rouhani.

In the last message, carried to Tehran by Oman’s Defense Minister Sayyid Badr bin Said Al Busaidiat, the US president said that Rouhani’s conciliatory gestures towards Washington needed to be backed up by an explicit pledge not to weaponise Iran’s nuclear program.

That pledge must come from the supreme leader in person and delivered publicly to Iran’s most hawkish audience, Revolutionary Guards chiefs.

And indeed, Khamenei acted out his part Tuesday under TV cameras.
Full details of the exchanges going back and both between Washington and Tehran will appear in the coming DEBKA Weekly 603 out Friday, Sept. 20.
They will confirm that the US president has come to terms with a nuclear-capable Iran and will be satisfied with Ayatollah Khamenei’s word that Tehran will not take the last step to actually assemble a bomb.
Our sources note that in his direct secret dialogue with Tehran, Obama is pursuing the same tactics he used for the Syrian chemical issue with Russian President Vladmir Putin: Moving fast forward on the secret track while pretending that the process is still at an early stage and then a sudden leap to target – a particular form of diplomacy consisting of verbal calisthenics.
This pretense was played out at the G20, when the two presidents acted as though they were irreconcilably divided on the Syrian question, while secretly tying up the ends of the chemical accord.

Obama’s willingness to accept Khamenei’s oft-repeated assurance that his country’s nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes – while letting its military program advance to the brink – leaves Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu lagging far behind and his Iranian policy with nowhere to go.

At the Israeli cabinet meeting Tuesday, the prime minister said his White House talks with President Obama on Sept. 30 would focus on Iran and his four demands:

1) Complete halt of uranium enrichment; 2) Removal of enriched materials from Iran; 3) Closure of the Fordo enrichment plant; 4) Termination of plutonium production at Arak.
Notwithstanding the briefing offered by Secretary of State John Kerry when he visited Jerusalem on Sunday, Sept. 15, it looks as though Obama is keeping the Israeli prime minister in the dark on his moves towards Iran.

Dov, this info I find on NBN website. Data is from 2012. Is it still current?

Kochav Yaakov is located just 15 minutes away from Jerusalem, and offers a stunning view of the Judean hills at a very reasonable cost. Residents of Kochav Yaakov take pride in their quality of life; the fresh air, beautiful homes, good schools and a close, community feeling.

The community is composed mainly of Hardal (Ultra-Orthodox/National Religious) and Dati Leumi (National Religious) families. Tel Tzion, a separate neighborhood in Kochav Yaakov, is for Haredi families. The residents of Kochav Yaakov and Tel Tzion enjoy being able to attend shuls and shiurim in one another’s neighborhoods.

Real Estate
Rentals and home purchases are available.

Rentals:
Many Yishuv families have added on small apartments to their houses.

Some small apartments available varying prices 50 – 80 sqm approx 1,800 NIS/month
3- 4 room apartment: (approx 100 sqm ) 2,500 – 3,000 NIS/month
House: 3,500 – 4,200 NIS/month

The Russian government said Wednesday that the UN experts’ report on the Aug. 21 chemical attack against the eastern outskirts of Damascus was a “disappointment” and showed “bias.” The special Moscow statement added that new materials received from the Assad regime proved that the rebels had conducted the chemical attack – not the Syrian army.

Nir Ben Artzi is no Rav and no Navi, but he is well respected by many here in Eretz Yisrael for his insight and for his positive insights on where we are headed. Some might call him a Chozeh of sorts with "psychic" insight into the future. More than anything he creates an atmosphere of hope for our bright future.

We are slated to build at least 60 more homes here in Kochav Yakov starting this Fall. I am sure the Ba'al Kerry is having a conniption fit about that. And we are only 10 km. from Pisgat Ze'ev. We are half the distance to Pisgat Ze'ev that Efrat is to Gilo. Tel Tzion sits on the northern most point from which one can still see the Temple Mt., and from the Givah in Kochav Yakov one has a clear view of Binyanei HaUmah next to the Jerusalem Central Bus Station.

Yes, it is best to use clean language even with mean people EXCEPT when others are putting people's lives and limbs in danger because of evil and stupidity. Sadly we have Jews here is Eretz Yisrael and in the Diaspora who are proud to do the latter (either for popularity or world public opinion or for Yeshivot as long as those yeshivot are not in the line of fire from the new border). Neshama, unfortunately people don't understand the size of the ocean or how small the Fukishima leak is in that scale, there are more natural radioactive materials dissolved in the sea than the tiny fraction of Fukishima residue, it is even possible to mine the sea water for natural uranium fuel were it not so much easier to extract from mines or spent reactor rods. Fukishima is not good event and has ruined several square km for habitation and farming but the bad is far overestimated by people who want to destroy civilization by eliminating the realistic power source of the future. If you scratch an anti-nuke you will nearly universally find an anti-civilization type related to the egotistical g-dless animal supremacist human extinctionists or an ignorant person influenced by such people.
Academic standing especially in unrelated fields doesn't make false statements and rumors true.
If you worry about radiation then work to close coal plants which constantly spew radionucleides into the air unlike a contained nuclear reactor.
So far 15,883 died from the earthquake and tsunami but 0(zero) fatalities and only 37 injuries (2 actually radiation related) from the reactor accident itself yet it gets constant coverage.

The real dangers from Fukishima are the cancers that will develop five to ten years after the event...and the cancers that will develop five to ten years after eating radioactive food.

i agree entirely with Neshama. the situation is critical. if we want to compare the deaths of this situation and that situation, which is worse and which is not so bad, no solution will be formed. its like the matter in syria. the sudden outrage when it was found chemicals were used, so basically the message one receives is, dont kill by chemicals but go ahead by conventional weapons. does this make sense? and this is also completely against the 7 noahide laws. which is meant for the rest of the world but is incorporated in the 613 laws for the jews. i wonder how pro nuclear people would feel if he or she were among the seals. who cannot open their mouths an d speak like us and tell of their pain. or the japanese mothers whose milk has radiation and cannot give feed their babies? Hashem told us to take care of this planet and its creations not to destroy it. with all the mess japan is doing, they want to open another 48 reactors. and in the first place this SHOULD NOT have been allowed because they are situated in the most vulnerable quake line. Talmud Sanhedrin 98a
Mosiach ben david will not arrive until someone seeks a fish and cannot find one. (i assume this means kosher fish).
the holy sages would not even pluck a blade of grass because it too has its purpose in this world. those who feel its not a danger should volunteer to go there and work on the problem and solve it.

Neshama,
If the radioactivity is killing the seals then please cite a reliable source. There would need to be very high level of radioactive contamination in the dead animals.
We have real problems to worry about and I agree we might see some Fukishima workers show up with cancer at a later time, in Japan worker safety when dealing with radioactive materials is bad enough already, then expecting heroic self sacrifice for the company I am sure there were unneeded exposures.
In any case the reason for any danger at all is the anti-nuke people have prevented safe modern designs from becoming standard leaving us with 50s and 60s designs.
To calm fears radiation monitoring equipment is easy to use and the equipment is inexpensive especially if you make your own. The only requirement is that you use a realistic safety/exposure scale, the current OSHA/NRC levels are very conservative and assume zero exposure safety.
With a good high sensitivity meter a fun experiment with kids is to detect the radioactive potassium in bananas or potassium chloride salt substitute.
If you can solder a kit can be had for under $100 just do an ebay search and don't choose uncalibrated cold war units.

I agree with you on looking after the planet via God-Fearing Practical Conservation, the trouble is that the global establishment’s idea of saving the planet via the hypocritical secularly dogmatic anti-human ideology of “Environmentalism” is a complete anathema to the Jewish view of looking after the Earth (e.g. Bereishit – 1:28).

Bear in mind that it is easy for normal people to very understandably dismiss the idea of looking after the planet and do the exact opposite out of spite, when the only views one hears on saving the planet effectively advocates punishing all Human achievement, imposing ridiculously crippling regulations/laws that destroys prosperity (which reduces birthrates) that is quickly replaced with a state of rationing/austerity/subsistence (that increases birthrates), engaging in a futile Global War against the Weather (e.g. “Man-Made Climate Change”) that is about as effective as Nimrod (and his followers) in days of old impotently shooting Arrows into the Heavens and basically elevating the Earth (plus all forms of non-Human life down to an amoeba) at the expanse of Man to the point of Idol Worship.

That is not to mention those who promote Environmentalism (as opposed to Practical Conservation) believe an ultimate end-game not unlike that from groups such as the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement or from books such as The Bridge by D. Keith Mano.

we have to each do our own part. no matter how small it is. stray animals i.e. cats and dogs are unimaginably treated. so my two sons, esp my second son, and two friends/students started taking care of the cats.my sons rent a house near to the work place. now there are about 25 cats. his students are coming in to help and quite some money is being used.we do feel the pinch. the cats are taken to the vets, vaccinated, blood tests done, and though its wrong to neuter animals, we have to do it. sometimes its not a choice between right and wrong, but more the lesser evil of the two. as daily strays are killed by people and on the highway. this is not australia where animal rights are very up held. good adoptive homes are found , or have to let them go astray, but they do know the place where they were taken care off and come back for food or if not well. its a minute dot, very minute in caring. and we are not wealthy people. my husband just went thro a very expensive colon chemo. every small act helps and Hashem comes in and opens avenues . after over 18 months, the local tv came and gave him and his two students 10 minute air time and he showed the terrible conditions of the animals when he first took them, some had boiling water thrown on them, one had an eye hanging, some had mange and you name it. almost all surived. after the tv show, many called for adoption, some came and donated. my husband buries dead birds or cats when he sees them. he takes a shovel and buries them, and he is a hindu while i am a noahide. we adopted two strays, these are small acts thats within our means. G-d does not expect one person to change the world, but ever y person's small act makes a big picture.

To Rav Dov and Meir M and the regular users of this blog,
Re 'Posting comments about Nir ben Artzi etc".

I have a suggestion.

Rather than bad feelings existing here between Meir and A. N. other, could the following posting protocol be observed?

For all users, if you want to post more than a paragraph or so of someone else's writing, which you have copied and pasted from elsewhere, then please either use a HTML hyperlink, or just pate the URL and a brief description of what it refers to?

I think I speak for most internet users when I say that I want to read what users themselves think or ask, rather than long transcripts lifted from elsewhere?

Of course, such long pieces of text can be useful for backing up an argument or providing detailed information about a subject, in which case the above suggested protocol can be used?

This keeps the comments section workable, user-friendly and vibrant.

It is by no means a criticism of Nir ben Artzi or anyone else either either Jewish or non-Jewish, it is simply my opinion on how any website comments section functions at it's optimum.

I do not refer to lengthy comments by users themselves, which I find fascinating and I very much look forward to Rav Dov's illuminations and elucidations of eschatology and mystical knowledge as well as on other areas of Judaism, history and science.

Moadim L'Simcha/Gut Moed, and those of you luck enough to be in Jerusalem tonight might want to check out the event involving Rabbis Ginsburg and Arush at the Chut Shel Chesed Sukah, 13 Shmuel Hanavi Street at 8pm.

Dov it rained very heavily (poured) ..rained for about an hour altogether altho not pouring the whole time...here in Katamon in thh middle of Yerushalayim on Motzi Shabat. Remember this part of Jerusalem held many important battles in the 1948 War...so it's not where the Temple will be but still important...i think anyway.

Rain poured down also in Yerushalayim's Kiryat Moshe neighborhood - enough to soak my whole succah mirpeset and left about 1.25 cm on the floor. It dried up by evening's end.

The former airstrip now known as Kanfei Nesharim (Wings of Eagles)/Yemin Avot/Rav Tsvi Yehuda is located in Givat Sha'ul and KM, respectively. It is definitely part of the path we would take to Har haBayit.

I was seriously wondering whether someone would say that this is a severe message from HaShem.

Perhaps there is some sort of a Tikun in the Kenians asking the Israelis to work together on this terror problem.
Just wondering,...

From the very beginning of the vote to release the 104 murderers amongst the Cabinet ministers, they were talking about 4 releases of 26 murderers each over a period of nine months. It was all over the news at the time of the vote, 4 releases of 26 murderers each.

Here is just one link. I am sure that you can find a bunch more:

Four times 26 Equals 104

I spoke with MK Dov Lipman tonight face to face, and he told me that the UNSC voting to shove a PA State down our throat was precisely the impetus that scared Bibi and others half to death to release the murderers. He said it in the lashon of what the "international community would do is September" if we did not comply. He is of course referring to the UN Security Council. We had a long discussion to be covered by a blog post that G-d willing I will write when time permits.

Rabbi Dov Lipman was not at that Cabinet meeting, but he knows what the Ba'al Kerry and Obama threatened Bibi with. Plus using a bit of common sense, it is so easy to figure it out even without talking to an MK face to face...as I did in all my earlier comments at the time.

We spoke about how it is important to look at worldwide isolation as a bracha and not as a curse. But so few Jews are willing to look at the world that way. Yet, they are now being given no choice. We only have G-d to rely on.

There was a Rav Dahan lecture about Kayin (Quf,Yud,Nun) and Hevel (Cain and Abel) and about how the blood of Hevel cried out to G-d from the ground. What is happening in Kenya (Quf, Nun, Yud) now is very deep and gets to the core of the plague of Blood that the world is experiencing now.

Kenya: Four Year Old Boy Confronts Terrorists, and Escapes Alive

"[F]our year-old Elliot Prior from Berkshire in Great Britain...in an astonishing show of courage, confronted and even chastised one of the gunmen - and escaped with his life.

According to the Daily Mail, Elliot had been hiding with his sister Amelie and their mother Amber under a table in a grocery store, with Amber sheltering her children under her own body for an hour and a half, when they were discovered by the terrorists, one of whom shot her in the thigh.

But when the terrorists asked if there were any children still alive in the store, Amber stood up and answered in the affirmative, in the hope that they would be spared.

It was at that point that little Elliot confronted the terrorists, telling them that they were "bad men."

Bizarrely, upon learning that Amber was of French origin, the gunmen began to plead with her for forgiveness, insisting that Islam "is not a bad religion" and urging her to convert."

-Such bravery from Elliot and such chutzpah from the Muslim murderers!!!

HaShem, I am humbled. Give me courage like that!

Thanks to A7.

Pitkah Tovah. All of the previous Judgements in Tishrei through Yom Kippur combined this world and the World to Come. Hoshana Rabba, 7th day of Sukkot, is the "filtered" judgement for this world only. The wicked receive their reward in this world, and the righteous receive their principal reward in the next world and the bulk of their tzarot for their few sins in this world. May that come to an end so that we see the righteous begin to receive more of their reward in this world and witness a closure of all the pain and suffering for sins in this lifetime and all previous lifetimes (gilgulim).

May we see the righteous nations of the world, whoever they might be, receive their reward this year, and may the rest of the worst be scattered like dust and crumble like chaff in the wind. Chag Sameach and pitkah tovah.

Since Hoshana Rabba is a busy day, I also should wish the readers a Happy Yom Shmini Chag Atzereth, 8th Day Festival of Cessation that comes on the heels of Sukkot with no break at all. Here is Israel we specifically avoid both the 4 Species and living in the Sukkah on the 8th day, so much so that the lulav and the etrog are muktzah on Shmini Atzereth. In Eretz Yisrael we try to avoid sleeping and even eating in the sukkah on the 8th day in order to draw a distinction between it and the 7 days of Sukkot that precede it. On the 8th day we pray for rain in Eretz Yisrael all over the world, and we dance with the Torah in Eretz Yisrael and in Chassidic synagogues all over the world. The Ashkenazi non-Chassidic world outside of Israel only dances with the Torah on the "9th day", the Rabbinic day of Shmini Atzereth which exists only because of the doubt over what day it actually is outside of Israel. Don't ask me why they (Ashkenazi non-Chassidic world) don't dance with the Torah on the 8th day. I really don't know the answer to that one. My guess is that it has something to do with the solemnity of Yizkor which is recited on the 8th day itself. In Eretz Yisrael the entire package of Simchat Torah, praying for rain, Yizkor, Completing Deuteronomy and Beginning Genesis, and a bunch of other things are all done in one day. no choice in the matter. There is no Safeika D'Yoma here. one of the costs/ benefits of Aliyah.

And then it is over, the Selichot that began in Elul, Psalm 27, Permitting of Vows, Rosh HaShana aka the day of lots of Shofar blowing, Tashlich, Avinu Malkheinu, More Selichot, Kaparot with money or a live chicken, Yom Kippur, Ne'ilah, building a Sukkah, buying 3 or the 4 species, pestering a neighbor for willow branches or using one's own, Sukkot (including blowing up sleeping mattresses before the Chag, setting up timers for lights, etc.), more willow branches, lots of willow branches for Hoshana Rabba, kreplach for some on Hoshana Rabba afternoon, saying goodbye to the Sukkah, Shmini Atzereth along with dancing with the Torah. All we are missing is the korbanot and of course the Holy Temple. Shabbat Bereishit and we begin all over again. Have a nice winter.

Of course during the five minutes since I wrote the one thing after another aspect of Elul/ Tishrei, it occurred to me that I forgot a bunch more: Shofar blowing during Elul, Apples and Honey on Rosh HaShana since the Tree of Eternal Life in the Garden of Eden is an Apple Tree (Ha Ha for those of you who thought that the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is an Apple Tree. That tree was most likely an Etrog or Fig Tree. Xtians seem to think that the Apple Tree was the other tree, not the Tree of Life, since apples are usually red, the color of sin. But they are simply incorrect.) Other symbolic foods on Rosh HaShana such as a pomegranate to number our mitzvot and the head of a fish or a sheep to be like the head and not like the tail. Tzom Gedaliah (poor fellow for getting assassinated AFTER the destruction of the 1st Temple, but it is nice practice for fasting on Yom Kippur), Shabbat Shuva, a long drasha on teshuvah, HaMelekh HaQadosh (We had someone in shul this year who said Keil haQadosh for the assembled, and he had to repeat Shmona Esrei on Shabbat.) Asking G-d to remember the merit of our prestigious ancestors to inscribed in the Book of Life, Tsedakah since both Teshuvah and Tefillah are so very hard to do with perfect kavanah, And this is just before Yom Kippur.

On Sukkot there is Ushpizim, inviting the spirit of our 7 shepherds of Israel into the Sukkah during each of the 7 nights/days.

Listen I am not complaining. I need to draw up a comprehensive list of what goes on in the 52 day period between Rosh Chodesh Elul (starting on the 30th of Av) and the end of Shmini Atzereth and then Isru Chag, and then Shabbat Bereishit.

So with Netanyahu officially stating that Israel is alone, what is G-d waiting for? G-d, it is now official, Israel stands alone, what happens now?

The US wants better relations with Persia, Israel, you are officially alone.

President Obama on Tuesday said he will use the remainder of his term to pursue better relations with Iran in the hope of resolving the controversy surrounding its nuclear program, pledging an activist U.S. agenda in the Middle East and beyond despite growing isolationist pressure at home.

In a 50-minute address to the U.N. General Assembly, Obama said he will devote his diplomatic efforts in the region to securing an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, hopeful that talks now underway through American encouragement may end the long conflict. He said that “real breakthroughs” on those two issues would “have a profound and positive impact on the entire Middle East and North Africa.”

Rav Dov

Your comment about the UNSC and the release of the murderers goes some way to answering a question I posed a few weeks ago.
If Bibi really was so spooked by what Obama and Kerry said, I can only guess that they promised a arbitrarily declared PA state and a UN vote to back it up or the UN vote first, followed by the declaration of independence. Chaos might well follow in Israel, a third intifada evolves into a war of "Independence" and UN troops are deployed...leading to fears of combat with the IDF.

Pitkah Tova/A Guten Kvitel, and Chag Sameach.

When/if readers have the time, might I advise them to watch a new documentary series from the BBC by British Jewish historian Simon Schama. It has five episodes, the last of which will be broadcast this Sunday evening. Overseas viewers in some countries can watch it on the BBC i player website.

There is plenty that he has not covered, it comes from a historic rather than a religious viewpoint, but it is visually spectacular.
